Shuswap sees summer spike in visitors

Tourism has increased significantly this summer at Shuswap Lake.

In Scotch Creek, locals and business owners say the number of visitors has been incredible.

“It’s one of the best summers we’ve had – tons of tourists the long weekends have been busy families have been coming out in droves, we’ve been well supported,” said Angela Lagore, co-owner of The Hub Restaurant and Bar.

Co-owner of Raven Apparel/Cup of Joe Coffee, Max Cerquo said the summer has been busy as ever.

“Starting about mid-July, it just was mayhem, the heat was here, the water was warm and the people flocked [here].”

Thousands of tourists from all over Canada come to the Shuswap each summer.

Although the North Shuswap Chamber of Commerce and Shuswap Tourism do not have definitive visitor numbers, they have seen a major increase in foot traffic as accommodations throughout much of the Shuswap have been completely booked all summer long.

The chamber, as well as businesses, attribute the rise in visitors this summer due to a lower wildfire threat.

“Compared to last summer, we had the smoke, the fires. There were tons of people [in the Shuswap], but the smoke and fires definitely scared people away,” Cerquo adds.

Seeing contrast to this summer, people are able to enjoy the local restaurants, beaches, and wilderness.

“It’s always a great place, there’s so much to do, so many options from young to old. There’s always something for people to do,” one visitor said.

“We love it out here. Lots of new friends and family comes out to visit because it’s such a beautiful place,” a tourist added.

Businesses say they have seen a positive spike in revenue this summer and tourists are happy to help out.

“When you’re helping out people who are local, it just feels like you’re giving back to the community and it’s always a nice thing to do,” a person said.

Lagore said she and other business owners are thankful for the summer their businesses have had.

“I just think the Shuswap is growing and going in a positive direction and we just hope people come back and enjoy the Shuswap and all that it has to offer from Squilax and up to St. Ives.”
