Freeze Food Scraps and other Tips

City of Vernon offers tips to reduce compost odours

Aug 1, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The City of Vernon is offering some tips for keeping the organics carts from getting too smelly, which has been an issue since the new program begin earlier this year.

A PSA video by the city suggests people freeze their compost.

“One of the things you can do before your collection date is to freeze your food scraps, either in the kitchen catcher that you’re provided or another container,” said Nicole, the City of Vernon’s Organics Ambassador, in the PSA.

“This way it will reduce the odours when you place it in your cart.”

The City of Vernon also suggests

  • only putting food scraps in the cart when the kitchen catcher is completely full or just before pickup
  • line the carts with cardboard or newspaper
  • use Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified compostable bags to line the carts
  • store carts in the shade or in a garage
  • rinse out the kitchen catcher and carts on a regular basis
  • sprinkle baking soda in layers throughout the carts, though the City does not advise putting large amounts at the bottom of the bin.

Residents who are not part of the organics collection program, such as residents of apartment buildings, can dispose of food waste at the community organics bin at the Recreation Centre Complex n adjacent to 39th Ave. in the auditorium parking lot.
