Vernon rowers return home with four medals from B.C. Summer Games

Four members of the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club won’t soon forget their experiences at the B.C. Summer Games in Prince George.

Four of them won medals at the provincial event, including 16-year-old Jonas Masys who won gold in the U17 Men’s Single Scull.

Masys posted a time of 3:36.6 on the 1,000 metre course, and beat his closest opponent by more than six seconds.

Sierra Munroe, 14, won a bronze medal in the U17 Women Single Scull race, with a time of 4:26.3.

The U17 Men’s Double Scull crew from Vernon: Nolan Stiven (16) and Cole O’Connor (14) crossed the A Final finish line second at 3:41.2, scoring the silver.

Vernon’s U19 crews: Elena Masyte (17) and Molly Caldwell (17) for the women, and men’s pair Kaden O’Connor (17) and Parker Munroe (17) were fourth in their races.

Vernon, together with Salmon Arm, were representing the Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan) rowing team, with a total of fifteen athletes and three coaches: Glen Stiven, David Miege and Doris Mills.

Salmon Arm crews were awarded two more medal sets: Heidi Miege and Hannah Breugem won bronze in U17 Women Double Scull race, and Ian Van Bergyek with Jonathan Breugem captured bronze in U17 Men Double Scull competition.

The Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club has been operating since 1997 as a hub for rowers and paddlers on Swan Lake.
