With forecasted temperatures in the mid-30s, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is opening cooling centres in area municipalities.

The CSRD said the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and the SASCU Recreation Centre in Salmon Arm will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Also, a temporary cooling centre will be run by the SAFE Society at the Human Connection Hub in Salmon Arm from noon to 5 p.m. July 25 to 29; and the District of Sicamous is using its Municipal Hall as a cooling centre from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The Shaw Centre and SASCU Recreation Centre will have water bottle filling stations, while water will be available at the Human Connection Hub and Sicamous Municipal Hall.

The Shuswap Emergency Program is working with agencies, including Interior Health, the City of Salmon Arm and the District of Sicamous, to support those in need during this heat wave.

The regional district noted the Shuswap Emergency Program is in contact with other community partners and neighbourhood emergency programs to assist vulnerable people in the area and provide supports on an as-needed basis.

Anyone in need of assistance can contact the Shuswap Emergency Program at 250-832-2424.

The CSRD said it will open other facilities as cooling centres as needed.
