Shuswap Lake nearing record level

Jun 15, 2022 | 4:11 PM

The level of Shuswap Lake is just over a metre from being at an all-time high.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is monitoring the water levels of both the Shuswap River and Lake, and, as of 7 a.m. June 15, the lake level was reportedly 348.283 metres.

That is an increase of 0.078 m since the last update at 7 a.m. on June 14 when the level was 348.205 m.

Looking back on historic flood years, the CSRD noted that the highest peak lake level on record was 349.660 m during the 1972 flood year.

In the 2012 flood year, the lake peaked at 349.588 m, and in 2018, the high water mark was 349.141 m.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch for the CSRD, which means the river levels are rising and may approach or exceed banks, resulting in flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers.

The Shuswap Emergency Program has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to assist with flood preparations for the area.
