The Jean Minguy Memorial RCMP Youth Academy makes its return from the pandemic with programs starting this weekend.

The academy, a collaboration between Vernon School District 22 and Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, is a work experience initiative for students age 16 to 18 to explore a career in law enforcement through a hands-on, simulated police academy format.

The program, which runs from May 8 to 14, will see 27 candidates train, learn, eat and sleep together at the Vernon Army Camp.

The students will navigate simulated police scenarios, complete daily physical training, learn foot drills, and receive basic instruction in police tactics, use of force, law, community policing principles, and related academics.

The program will feature a number of guest presenters to give students a look at various specialized units with the RCMP such as Police Dog Services, Underwater Recovery Team, Indigenous Policing Services, Emergency Response Team, and Forensic Identification Services. Partner agencies including Vernon Fire Rescue Services, B.C. Prosecution Service and B.C. Emergency Health Services will also attend.

This year will also feature a special presentation from Sgt. Brenda Winpenny, spokesperson for the B.C. Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, to provide an overview of their role in policing including their mandate as the provinces anti-gang agency, history of gang landscape un B.C., the awareness and prevention initiative “End Gang Life” and the different units that make up CFSEU-BC.

The academy is named in honour of RCMP Constable Joseph Martial Maurice Jean Minguy, who lost his life while on duty in Vernon on June 3, 2005.
