Vernon ready for e-bike rentals

Apr 25, 2022 | 5:00 AM

First it was e-scooters, and now electric bikes are coming to Vernon.

Neuron Mobility will launch its rental e-bike program this Saturday, April 30.

The company will start with 20 e-bikes distributed within the downtown and on shared pathways.

Neuron will monitor the program and increase the number of bikes depending on ridership.

The company says the cost to rent an e-scooter or e-bike will be the same.

Riders, who must be at least 16 years of age, can book an e-bike or scooter using the Neuron App with single trips costing $1.15 to unlock the e-scooter and 35 cents per minute thereafter.

More frequent users also have the option to purchase Neuron three-day, weekly and monthly passes.

“E-bikes include the same cutting edge safety features found on Neuron’s e-scooters: integrated helmets, geofencing control, a 911 emergency button, voice guidance, topple detection and a ‘Follow my Ride’ function,” a news release from Neuron stated.

Vernon mayor Victor Cumming said it’s been exciting to watch residents and visitors embrace more sustainable forms of transportation to get around Vernon, explore the community, and visit local businesses.

“We have received many positive responses to the use of e-scooters in our community, and we look forward to seeing the impact that may be created by increased access to rental e-bikes,” said Cumming.

“The Greater Vernon Chamber is extremely excited to see Neuron Mobility add e-bicycles to its fleet as the roll out of e-scooters last year proved to be an extremely popular, eco-friendly way for residents and visitors to shop, dine and explore our community,” said Dan Proulx, Chamber general manager. “We are also thrilled that Neuron will use the Chamber’s Community Expo April 30 as a way of promoting safety when using e-scooters and e-bicycles.”

Neuron will host a #ScootSafe event on April 30 where community members can learn more about e-bikes and riding safely as part of the Chamber’s Community Expo at Kal Tire Place North from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Downtown Vernon Association called the Neuron e-bikes, like their e-scooter counterparts, an “effective, convenient and refreshing way to trek through our downtown area.”

“We are also pleased to see that the e-bikes even have a basket to accommodate any local shopping,” added the DVA.
