Ukrainian flag to remain up at Vernon City Hall

The City of Vernon will keep the Ukrainian flag flying at City Hall for longer than originally planned.

The flag was raised on March 2 with a three week time line, which was extended for another three weeks on March 28.

During the regular council meeting on Monday (April 11), Mayor Victor Cumming made a motion to adjust the three week time line to three months.

Councillor Scott Anderson stated he was not against having the flag flying over City Hall, but did voice a concern over the fluidity of the situation in Ukraine.

“The Russians have embarrassed themselves, and I frankly think they would like to do anything to get out of Ukraine right now. NATO weapons have started to filter in and it’s pretty much taken whatever advantage they had militarily away from them,” said Anderson.

“If we say three months and it’s kind of written in stone, this may be over before then.”

Cumming noted that council could have a motion at a later date to take down the flag once the war is over, which Anderson agreed with.

The motion to have the Ukrainian flag keep flying for three months, which would be in July, passed unanimously.
