City of Vernon enhances fleet with electric van

The City of Vernon is bolstering it’s fleet of vehicles by being one of the first municipalities in B.C. to use an electric van.

The full-size, high-roof, 100 per cent electric Ford Transit tradesperson van joins a growing fleet of city-owned, fully electric vehicles.

The city’s electric fleet now consists of the van, three cars, one utility terrain vehicle and six bicycles.

“Council is committed to taking action that will directly help us meet the goals in Vernon’s Climate Action Plan,” said Mayor Victor Cumming.

“One significant way we can help move the needle is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. By bolstering our electric vehicle fleet, the city is taking another important step in a tangible way to help meet our targets.”

The new electric van can travel up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, and will reduce the municipality’s fuel consumption by an estimated 16,800 litres over a ten year period.

Those fuel savings will also result in reducing the the equivalent of 38,640 kg of CO2 emissions over that period of time, which the city noted is important as the use of gas- and diesel-powered vehicles account for 63 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Vernon.

The new electric van replaces an older service vehicle that had reached the end it’s life and was scheduled for replacement.
