Vernon sets dates for leaf pick-up program

Mar 28, 2022 | 1:10 PM

Vernon residents who have been cleaning up their yards will be able to get their leaves and garden waste taken away as part of a city program.

The spring leaf pick-up program will take place April 11–15.

The one-week program will see Waste Connections of Canada provide curbside collection of leaves and garden waste in clear plastic bags on residents’ regular garbage collection day.

Vernon customers who receive curbside waste collection services may put out an unlimited number of transparent bags by 7 a.m. at the same location as your garbage collection pick-up.

If you choose to participate in the program, please remember:

  • All bags must be transparent, allowing the contents to be visible;
  • Any clear bags weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 lb) will be considered overweight and will not be picked up;
  • Missed bags not reported to the City of Vernon within 24 hrs will not be picked up;
  • All coloured bags will be considered as household garbage that is limited to the usual container quota.

Residents are asked not to rake leaves onto the street, as they block storm drains and jam the street sweeper.

The spring leaf pick-up program is separate from the upcoming residential curbside organics collection program, which is scheduled to begin in May 2022.

Residents are reminded that when the new organics collection program begins, kitchen and yard waste will be collected weekly, using new organics carts that will be delivered to properties throughout April.

“Once the new organics collection program is in place, the city will monitor the spring and fall leaf pick-up programs, and the annual spring chipping program, to determine whether future changes need to be made for those services,” a city news release stated.
