Snow in Shuswap, East and West Columbia

Heavy snow on Highway 3 and Trans-Canada expected Saturday

Nov 12, 2021 | 10:00 AM

UPDATE: Snowfall statement extended to Coquihalla

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Shuswap and both West and East Columbia as heavy snowfall is expected in those regions Saturday night.

The weather agency said upwards of 20 centimetres of snow is expected on Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass on the Trans-Canada Highway as well as from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass on Highway 3.

The high elevation snow is being forecasted as a series of moist systems associated with an atmospheric river from the Pacific is expected to arrive in the region Saturday.

Environment Canada states that the system will bring periodic heavy snow Saturday night, but as the temperature climbs above freezing levels Sunday morning the precipitation will transition to rain which is expected to persist into Monday.

The heavy snow may lead to difficult traveling conditions on highways, and weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, creating further driving hazards. Motorists are advised to check road conditions at DriveBC before hitting the road.

The public is also warned to be prepared for localized flooding, as the heavy precipitation combined with rapid warning may lead to excessive melt off.
