Valley Auction site turned over to new owner

A new company has taken over ownership of the Valley Auction site in Spallumcheen.

Integrity Building Products completed purchase of the site on Raffan Road off of Highway 97A over the summer, and a ceremony was held this week to honour the Raffan family which has owned Valley Auction for close to six decades.

Owners and auctioneers Don and Peter Raffan have specialized in livestock auctions, along with auto, machinery and estate sales.

Don Raffan told Vernon Matters, Valley Auction as a business, is continuing.

“I’m still an active auctioneer across Canada. I still sell sales. We’ll hold farm sales and on-sites sales. We just won’t have any right there at Valley Auction. But I’m still a travelling auctioneer and I’ve got as many bull sales and horse sales as I’ve ever had. I’m probably booking more than I’ve ever had in my career now because I have the time to do them.”

Integrity, which is based out of Okotoks Alta., is operating a building materials facility at the site.

“Integrity is well known in the Calgary area for working closely with home builders, contractors and homeowners to meet their project and business needs. We are excited to take our offering into a new geography and are well-positioned to service customers from Kamloops to Salmon Arm to Vernon,” said a news release from the company.

Don Raffan said Valley Auction was started by his mother and father in 1963, but he said the decision to sell the site was made easier by changes to the auction and livestock industries, especially beef and cattle, over the years.

“It wasn’t really there anymore, so as the business changes, you have to change too. So I didn’t need that property anymore and that’s why we did what we did.”

Don and his brother Peter bought into their parent’s business in 1976.

“I saw some huge changes,” Don Raffan continued. “The biggest shock was when BSE was created in 2003, that really hurt. I saw how it destroyed the cattle industry and how it took the confidence away. All the little beef farmers that we had in this entire valley, they disappeared. And that’s when I really choked up. It was’nt necessary, but it happened. You know what happens in politics.”

Raffan is very pleased with the new site owners, Integrity Builders.

“Jerry Myer [the CEO], they have treated me with total respect. It’s been a nice transition.”

Integrity Building Products specializes in lumber packages, trusses and floor systems.

“We believe strongly in building lasting partnerships with our customers. We’ve proven for more than a decade that finding smart, service-oriented ways to help our customers with design, estimating and materials is beneficial for all stakeholders including their trades and end-use customers” said COO Scott Myer. “Adding a second location in B.C. will bring a fresh approach and options to those looking to procure building materials in the Okanagan.”
