Vipers comeback in season opener falls short

The new BC Hockey League season got off to a losing start for the Vernon Vipers.

The Penticton Vees built up a 4-0 lead over two periods and hung on to beat the Vipers 4-2 Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre, one of seven opening night games for the league’s 60th anniversary season.

Josh Niedermayer, son of former NHL geat Scott Niedermayer and a Penticton native, led the Vees with two goals.

Reagan Milburn and Ryan Shostak netted third period markers for Vernon before the announced crowd of 2,500.

Vernon only mustered 14 shots on Vees goalie Kaeden Lane while Penticton managed 24 on Vernon’s Roan Clarke.

The Vipers next play Friday, Oct. 15 in Salmon Arm before hosting the Silverbacks in their home opener Saturday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
