Fishing Ban

Recreational fishing banned in most of the Okanagan, including Vernon

Aug 11, 2021 | 4:52 PM

The B.C. government has banned recreational fishing in most areas of the Okanagan, including Vernon.

The order, brought on by drought conditions that have reduced water conditions while increasing water temperatures, applies to all streams in Management Units 8-1 through 8-5 and Management Units 8-21 through 8-23.

Those areas include Vernon, Kelowna, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Osoyoos, Oliver, Keremeos, Princeton, Summerland, Peachland and Cherryville.

The closure will remain in effect until September 15, 2021.

The province said the current conditions of these bodies of water are creating difficult conditions for fish particularly those that are released after being caught, as they have trouble recovering in these conditions.

The Thompson-Okanagan Fish and Wildlife Branch recommends anglers avoid water bodies where the surface water temperatures are 20 C or higher.

The province is also encouraging people to report fish kills to their local Fish and Wildlife Office or RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277, while anglers are advised to refer to the Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis for angler alerts and potential in-season fishery closures.
