Interior Health prepares for wildfire emergency

Jul 29, 2021 | 3:30 PM

Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong is the North Okanagan site where Interior Health will provide emergency facilities should there be mass wildfire evacuations and power loss.

As part of emergency preparations, Interior Health is locating deployable alternate care sites— or DACS— in the north and south Okanagan.

The resources, provided by Health Emergency Management BC, contain the supplies and equipment required to rapidly set up a care site resembling a field hospital.

The DACS in the South Okanagan is being positioned at Summerland Seniors Village in Summerland, with St John Ambulance supporting the deployment process.

IH said at this time, only the Summerland DACS will be unpacked which provides the supplies and equipment to care for approximately 40 people in case of emergency.

Throughout Interior Health, portable generators continue being positioned at key health care facilities to ensure services can continue if power is lost.

IH said proactive evacuations will continue for healthcare clients, residents, and patients impacted by evacuation alerts. Anyone wishing to confirm their loved one’s evacuated location can call 1-877-442-2001.
