Group warns of floating risks on Shuswap River

Jul 14, 2021 | 9:46 AM

The water may look calm but there is strong currents and natural hazards for people thinking about floating on the Shuswap River.

That’s part of a warning issued by the Shuswap River Ambassadors on social media saying there’s been a near drowning involving alcohol, a rescue of a parent with small children, and a lost group on the river that required the RCMP to be called all just over the last few days.

The safety group is asking people to respect the river, to wear life jackets, and to use discretion so as not to put emergency responders’ lives at risk to save people.

The Enderby and District Chamber of Commerce says on its website tube floating is one of the most popular activities in Enderby, but it also poses certain dangers. Participants are advised to be aware of safe practices and how to spot potential hazards.
