UPDATE: Vernon automated garbage collection means a rate increase

May 27, 2021 | 3:20 PM

Update:

The move to automated collection carts for residential garbage in the city is going to cost taxpayers a little more.

Vernon council approved the new fee structure at Tuesdays council meeting.

Residential garbage fees will go from $36.88 to $42.00 per quarter, an increase of $20.48 a year.

Residential garbage extended service rises from $42.84 to $47.95 per quarter and increase of $20.44 a year.

All other fees remain the same.

The new charges come into effect on September 1, 2021 to coincide with the introduction of the 240 litre bins.

Original:

The City of Vernon has approved $1,410,189 for the purchase of automated collection carts, funded from the Sewer Rate Stabilization Reserve.

The 240 litre automated collection bins will be delivered to 14,000 Vernon households in August with collection to commence in September.

The contract with the current waste collection and recycling provider (Waste Connections Canada) has been extended to April 30, 2022, to allow for the transition.

Staff indicate that the move will allow for the city to introduce organics collection and potentially move to bi-weekly garbage pickup.
