On leash dog trial

There will be lots of ‘bark’ at Kin Beach Park

An ‘on-leash’ trial has been approved for this summer for Kin Beach Park.

Vernon council voted in favour of spending $2,000 for signage and pet waste receptacles, but not all council members wanted to see Fido frolic at the park.

“It is unfortunate that the few select ruin it for everyone else, but between the goose poop and the dog poop, it is disgusting walking in that park,” Coun. Dalvir Nahal said.

Nahal, who owns two dogs, indicated that she reached out to the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) about the number of off-leash dogs on Canoe (Sandy) Beach, which adjoins Kin.

The Regional District of North Okanagan, in conjunction with OKIB, developed a pathway, and allow dogs on leash on the trail, but not on the sand.

The trial would see dogs allowed in all areas of the park including on the beach.

Coun. Akbal Mund told council he has been getting calls from residents that want a park where no dogs are allowed. Lakeshore Beach Park was suggested.

The trial will run from June 15 to Oct. 15, 2021.
