Safety improvements sought for Hurlburt Beach

May 17, 2021 | 3:05 PM

Following a near miss between a boater and a young swimmer, the City of Vernon is following through on an application the Ministry of Transport to mark the swimming area at Hurlburt Beach on Eastside Road.

Mayor Victor Cumming first raised the issue in September 2020, with staff reporting that a rope-lined swim buoy system would be the most effective protection for swimmers.

The city has applied under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act for approval of the work.

Pursuant to paragraph 7(2) of the said Act:

“Anyone wishing to review the application can do so, on the online Navigable Waters Registry (http://cps.canada.ca/) and under registry number 2990, or, under the NPP File Number 2021-503927.”

The city is also working with the Okanagan Landing Community Association on an upgrade to the buoy system at Paddlewheel Park.
