Fire Safety House comes to a screen near you

The Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) is bringing back its Fire Safety House in a different form.

Prior to the pandemic, KFD would tour Kelowna schools with its portable Fire Safety House, educating students about fire safety. Now, the Fire Safety House – the virtual version – is debuting on screens, everywhere.

“COVID-19 continues to be a challenge and it has taken a lot of things from the community,” said Paul Johnson, Fire Prevention Officer, KFD. “But what it hasn’t taken away is the inspiration for new ideas and innovation. To that end, we are so pleased to share the virtual Fire Safety House video with all school aged children in Kelowna within the local school district, private schools and the community.”

Students are taught the importance of evacuating the home when they hear the smoke alarm, staying low under smoke, how to check doors for heat prior to opening them and proceeding to their designated family meeting spot outside.

In addition to touring the Fire Safety House virtually this year, students will have the opportunity to tour the Kelowna Fire Hall 1 virtually as well – another video created by the department to bring the community into the fire hall while remaining physically distanced during the pandemic. Following the virtual tours the department will host virtual assemblies for classes, offering a Q&A session with fire prevention officers and firefighters.
