City Centre Park follow-up survey underway

May 14, 2021 | 2:20 PM

Vernon city hall wants to know what you think about plans for the City Centre Park on the former Civic Arena property.

The new multi-use trail alongside the property recently opened as part of the long awaited north-south alternative traffic route, exposing a lot more people to the property.

“The park design will reflect the uniqueness of Vernon and be an all-season destination that will meet the needs of visitors of all ages and abilities,” the consultation page on Vernon.ca stated. “Users of the recently completed Polson Greenway will be able to stop here for a break in the shade, while the park will provide needed green-space to the surrounding neighbourhood.”

The concept design will be presented to council in June for approval to proceed to construction. Initial site preparation and construction of the new park is expected to begin as early as August 2021.

During the summer of 2020, the city conducted a survey to ask what was important about the new park. Nearly 1,000 people responded, indicating below what they would like to see.

  • place for family, friends and neighbours to picnic, relax and socialize.
  • site for people of all generations to participate in activities like reading, napping and playing in comfortable, safe and lit spaces.
  • provide outdoor green space with places to sit amongst shade and trees.
  • create a variety of opportunities for small community activities.

Following the completion of the survey follow-up, planners will present the final park design to city council for their approval.

The final stage will be detailed design and construction.
