UPDATE: Petition to close 30th Avenue quickly gains traction

UPDATE:

A change.org petition started earlier this week in support of closing two blocks of 30th Avenue, for use by restaurants for patio space, has surpassed a goal of 500 signatures.

The petitioner William Oordt-Bosman has now changed the goal to 1,000 names.  Vernon council will review the logistics and cost related to the closure, at the next council meeting on May 10.

“Since last April, small businesses have been faced with numerous struggles. Our local businesses need our support now more than ever. A proposal by city councillor Dalvir Nahal would close 30th Avenue (Main Street) to traffic between 29th and 31st streets on Thursdays – Sundays,” petition initiator William Oordt-Bosman stated.

The proposal would allow businesses to use the road for outdoor patios.

Last year the City of Kelowna blocked off parts of Bernard Avenue downtown and there was an overwhelming positive response both from businesses and customers.

Vernon council will have a meeting on May 10 to make a decision.

“If you are in favour of this motion and support the closing of the two main street blocks, from 29th to 31st street, please let your voice be heard by signing this petition and emailing our city councillors,” Oordt-Bosman added.
