B.C. Covid update Tuesday: 799 new cases

British Columbia’s Covid-19 update for Tuesday had 799 new cases, including 96 in Interior Health (IH).

Going into the day, B.C.’s seven-day average was 887 cases per day.

Within the IH health region, there are 667 active cases, with 40 people in hospital and 18 un critical or intensive care.

Provincially, there are 8,089 active cases with 500 hospitalizations and 164 people in critical care.

Case counts by health region:

  • 31,349 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 121)
  • 73,082 — Fraser Health (up by 534)
  • 4,568 — Island Health (up by 28)
  • 10,760 — Interior Health (up by 96)
  • 7,096 — Northern Health (up by 16)
  • 193 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 4)

There have been no new deaths since Monday with the total still at 1,571.

Meantime, the provincial state of emergency has been extended another two weeks, to May 11.

To date, 1,671,128 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 89,457 of which are second doses.

“The first step for everyone is to register for their vaccine. Everyone in B.C. who is 18 years and older is now eligible to do so on the Get Vaccinated website,” Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a statement. “In our age-based program, anyone 59 and older can now take the next step of booking their appointment. We encourage you to do that right away. Our worker program continues with targeted clinics underway. This program will be further expanded as significantly more vaccine starts to arrive in our province next week.”

Update on outbreaks:

· Cottonwoods Care Centre long-term care in Kelowna has 29 cases: 26 residents and three staff, with two deaths connected to the outbreak.

· Orchard Haven long-term care in Keremeos has two cases: one resident and one staff.

· Sandalwood Retirement Resort independent living in Kelowna has 25 cases: 24 residents and one staff, with one death connected to the outbreak.
