New north-south Vernon route close to opening

Drivers and cyclists will soon have access to a new north-south connector road to get through Vernon.

The 30th Street corridor project, which has been completed in phases, is getting close to opening.

“The city is pleased to say that paving of the new 29th/30th Street corridor is expected to begin [this] week. We anticipate the road to be open to traffic in early May,” Christy Poirier, communications manager, told Vernon Matters.

Poirier said one portion of the project will take some additional time, as CN Rail needs to update its crossing warning signals.

“That portion of the project is anticipated to be complete this fall,” she explained.

The idea for a transportation corridor for vehicles, transit, cyclists and pedestrians stretching from Polson Park at the south, to the Village Green Shopping Centre in the north, dates back well over a decade.

The final phase, which includes a roundabout near the former Civic Arena site to connect 30th and 29th streets, got underway in 2020.

“This project has been many years in the making and will certainly change how people move through our community on a north-south corridor. Our team is considering how we can mark this special occasion when the project is complete,” Poirier added.

The new route will remove some of the traffic congestion off 32nd and 27th streets, the city’s most-used north-south corridors.
