City services for school expansion

BX Elementary School now part of the City of Vernon

An application by School District 22 (SD #22) to have B.X. School at 5849 Silver Star Road become part of Vernon, has passed another hurdle.

The city undertook an alternative approval process on behalf of the school district for the annexation.

Only one person objected to the application of an estimated 34,573 eligible voters.

The alternative approval process requires that 10 per cent or more of the eligible electors must sign and submit response forms in opposition to the proposed initiative to require the local government to obtain assent (referendum) of the electors in order to proceed.

An almost $12-million project to add ten new classrooms is in full swing at the school. It will create a 240-seat addition, nearly doubling the size of the school.

Being in the city will allow the school to access water and sewer services.

Vernon will now advise the Minister of Municipal Affairs that they have permission from voters to proceed with the boundary extension.
