Vernon council reconsiders location for R.V. sani-dump

Apr 15, 2021 | 4:30 PM

UPDATE:

Vernon Council will review a decision to move the recreation vehicle sani-station from the former Civic Arena property to the 5800 block of Okanagan Landing Road.

The news caused an uproar on social media, questioning the safety for children at Ellison Elementary and a location too far from the city centre.

Council is holding a special meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday April 20, to discuss legacy projects that could be undertaken with funds granted to the city by Fortis B.C.

The sani-station issue was added to the meeting.

Construction in City Centre Park (former Civic Arena) is forcing the city to relocate the recreational vehicle sani-dump, but council was split on the new temporary location and a proposed long-term solution.

The relocation will cost $30,000 for installation of the station, and additional signage.

“We have been looking for a site for about a year, and the only suitable temporary location we have found, is along Okanagan Landing Road on the frontage road off Fulton Road,” James Rice, Public Works Manager, told council.

Staff are proposing moving the installation to Kin Park on 43rd Ave., once the property is developed, which could be five years away.

“I’m going on record that I’m not for putting a sani-dump at Kin Park, that is not the spot.” Coun. Kari Gares said.

“Have we attempted to partner with a business, Canadian Wholesale for instance? The whole end of their parking lot is not used, certainly not very heavily, and I just use that as an example,” Coun. Scott Anderson inquired.

Staff indicated no private businesses have been contacted about partnering with the city.

“Is this something we put off for two more weeks, and go out and explore other options? It just seems like all the options we have been discussing are a question of palatability,” Mayor Victor Cumming stated.

The city is not legally required to have a sani-dump, but it is a well used service by both local recreational vehicle owners and visitors.

The Real Canadian Superstore has the only other sani-dump in the city, which is primarily intended for customers purchasing fuel. It was noted the city doesn’t charge any additional sewer fees to the company.

“I think for now this is a good solution on Okanagan Landing Road, but I think the opportunity is there for us to put out a RFP (request for proposals), or talk to another business,” Coun. Brian Quiring said. “I think you would surprise yourself, and find another gas station or other business.”

The new temporary location was approved in a 4-2 vote with Mayor Cumming and Coun. Anderson opposed.
