Four-way stop cost finalized

Vernon council has finally settled on a budget to make the temporary four-way stop at 43rd Avenue and 20th Street permanent.

Council approved spending $80,000 from the local improvement reserve.

In addition, council endorsed increasing the 2021 transportation safety project budget from $20,000 to $100,000. The city uses these funds each year to address safety issues which may arise, such as new roadside barriers or crosswalk upgrades.

Council has also approved a new city-wide transit shelters project with a budget of $100,000. All three projects are funded from reserves so there is no change to the tax rate to achieve the improvements to the city’s transportation network.

The intersection in the Harwood area previously just had stop signs on 20th Street, but it was turned into a four-way stop, as part of a detour route last year when Pleasant Valley Road was closed for construction.

Residents petitioned council to keep the four-way stop, and council agreed, against a staff recommendation, to remove the stop signs on 43rd Avenue.

Staff then returned to council with a price tag of $180,000 to make it a permanent four-way, something council balked at, and sent the matter back for a less expensive design.
