Greater Vernon politicians reach out to First Nations

Mar 6, 2021 | 9:00 AM

Regular meetings involving Vernon mayor Victor Cumming and Vernon council and Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) Chief Byron Louis and his council members, have been ongoing for the past few years.

The sessions have resulted in a better understanding and cooperation on several issues.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC) is now reaching out to both OKIB and the Splatsin First Nation to have members sit on GVAC, as non-voting members, to provide insight and context.

The first draft of a terms of reference is currently with OKIB council for review and input.

GVAC makes recommendations to the Regional District of North Okanagan board on such functions as trails and open spaces, Greater Vernon Water and other pertinent issues involving Vernon, Coldstream, and Electoral Areas B and C.
