UPDATE: Fire displaces five residents, two pets die

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.

West Kelowna’s fire chief says during the search operation at a house fire on Ponderosa Road, a firefighter fell thru the floor to the basement.

“A rapid intervention team was activated to assist, and the firefighter was able to rescue himself. He was assessed, transported to Kelowna General Hospital and discharged shortly after to recover at home from a knee and back injury,” Chief Jason Brolund said.

Brolund said the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, related to cooking activities on the lower level.

“The public is reminded to check their smoke alarms as they can save you from fire, especially while you are asleep,” Brolund added.

An overnight fire in West Kelowna has damaged a home, claimed the lives of two pets and put five residents in the care of Emergency Support Services.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a fire in a residence on Ponderosa Road just after 3 a.m. this morning.

“Upon arrival, the rear of the home was fully involved. Firefighters attacked the flames and entered the building to search for any occupants,” Fire Chief Jason Brolund said.

Five occupants are in the care of Emergency Support Services. One pet was found by firefighters and two other pets did not survive.

One firefighter was injured and is undergoing further assessment.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire Investigators will commence a fire and cause determination investigation later today,” Brolund said.

Four engines, one ladder truck and three support vehicles responded with 21 personnel. BC Ambulance and RCMP were also called to the scene for support.
