B.C. Covid case count grows by 542, fewer active cases

B.C. recorded 542 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday (Mar. 3), including 43 within Interior Health.

The numbers are included in an update provided by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

The new cases raise B.C.’s total to 81,909 since the pandemic began, spread out thusly:

  • 18,887 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 131)
  • 47,977 — Fraser Health (up by 292)
  • 2,453 — Island Health (up by 31)
  • 7,494 — Interior Health (up by 43)
  • 4,687 — Northern Health (up by 44)
  • 161 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry said 18 of the new cases are variants of concern, swelling the total of variant cases found in B.C. to 200. Eleven of those cases remain active.

There are 4,654 active cases of the virus in B.C., down by 25 from Tuesday. Two-hundred-and-forty-six patients are in hospital and 64 are in intensive care.

Seven more people have died of COVID-19, increasing the province’s death toll to 1,372.

Henry reports 8,617 people under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

There are 75,819 people considered fully recovered from the virus, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says 289,809 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 86,616 second doses.

Update on Interior Health outbreaks:

· Kelowna General Hospital has six cases: five patients and one staff, with one death connected to this outbreak.

· The Florentine in Merritt has two resident cases.

· Highridge/Singh House group home in Kamloops has 13 cases: five residents and eight staff.

· Westsyde Care Residence group home in Kamloops has 30 cases: 17 residents and 13 staff, with two deaths connected to this outbreak.

· Brocklehurst Gemstone long-term care in Kamloops has 32 cases: 24 residents and eight staff, with two deaths connected to this outbreak
