Highway barrier project set to begin

A long-awaited safety project is expected to get underway today on the highway north of Swan Lake.

A company, Tri-Kon Precast Products, will begin installing concrete median barriers on Highway 97A over a 5.7 kilometre section from Spallumcheen to Armstrong.

The project will prevent head-on and crossover crashes, which claimed the lives of two women in separate accidents in 2019.

The construction is expected to run Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the company telling the Township of Spallumcheen it will minimize the impact to motorists as much as possible.

“At least two lanes of traffic will be maintained whenever possible throughout construction to accomodate local residents, business and emergency services,” stated a report from the township to council.

The normal 100 km/h speed limit will be reduced to 60 km/h during periods of active work and 80 km/h during periods of inactivity.

“The barriers will ensure an added layer of protection for travellers by preventing head-on collisions and other crossover incidents, especially at night and during bad weather conditions,” a news release from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure stated.

The project is expected to be completed April 30, 2021.
