Coldstream deals with speeding and three-way stop concerns

Feb 22, 2021 | 10:51 AM

Despite new measures to curb it, a Coldstream resident says speeding is still a major problem on Kalamalka Road.

Gary Shwaluk has written to the district, suggesting a “large number” of the vehicles are going close to double the 50-km/h limit.

He said the vertical traffic calming devices added earlier this year have not had a huge impact on the speeds, and he’s willing to work with the district on solutions.

“As we had discussed last year, ongoing efforts will be needed, and I know the RCMP have ramped up weekday, daylight presence in the area,” wrote Shwaluk in his letter to council. “What is also very noticeable is that there is no RCMP radar presence that is spending any stationary time where they have radar set to capture and ticket many of the speed demons between 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.”

Shwaluk would also like to get details on the data collected from the speed reader boards near Friesen’s Restaurant on Kalamalka Road.

“It is still very clear that the volume of speeders travelling on most of Kalamalka Road is in the hundreds to thousands of vehicles every week and that a very large number of them are travelling at closer to double the speed limit,” Shwaluk commented.

Also tonight (Feb. 22), Coldstream council will discuss a petition that is calling for the removal of a three way stop at the Kickwillie Loop intersection.

People from 35 households on the petition say it’s unnecessary and difficult to stop when icy.

The three-way stop was originally put in at the request of residents concerned about speeding vehicles.
