Vernon gets a share of flood mitigation funds

Vernon is sharing $8.5 million in provincial emergency preparedness funding along with three other interior communities.

Vernon was approved to receive $747,000 to construct a sedimentation pond to reduce deposits along BX Creek, which has a long history of flooding and sediment transport.

The pre-planning work for the pond has been completed, the Agriculture Land Commission (ALC) must still weigh in as the pond would be located on the B.X. Ranchland property.

The removal of sediment during the freshet is hoped to alleviate long standing flooding issues downstream and subsequent impacts on water quality due to turbidity.

The other projects are in Dawson Creek, Sparwood, and Williams Lake through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund’s (CEPF) structural flood-mitigation stream.

The Regional District of North Okanagan made an application the CEPF for funds to identify and plan emergency evacuation routes from Silver Star Mountain Resort and Cosens Bay.

This funding is part of a $69.5 million plan designed to help communities prepare for, and respond to, disasters.
