Dr. Henry calls on B.C. to ‘hold-off’ on Super Bowl parties

Feb 1, 2021 | 3:30 PM

B.C.’s daily COVID-19 case numbers were down a bit over the weekend with an average of 386 a day for a total of 1,158.

That’s down from the 514 on Friday and 546 on Thursday last week.

The weekend totals included 194 cases in Interior Health (average of 64 a day).

There were 21 more COVID-related deaths, including six in Interior Health.

One death was at Noric House in Vernon, and another at Heritage Square in Vernon. Both facilities have nine deaths connected to outbreaks.

There was also one additional death at Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna, the fourth there.

The three other deaths were in the community/hospital.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, urged residents to ‘hold off on the Super Bowl celebrations” this year (the game is on Sunday, Feb. 7).

“You should not be planning — whether it’s at home, a bar or a restaurant — viewings of the Super Bowl. If we are not able to control this, and start seeing spread again, we can undo all the good work we have done,” Henry stated at Monday’s COVID update.

Henry said the province will update the current health restrictions this Friday (Feb. 5).

From Friday to Saturday, there were 408 new cases; 473 from Saturday to Sunday, and 277 from Sunday to Monday.

The provincial total is now 67,937 cases.

New cases since Friday:

  • 295 Vancouver Coastal Health
  • 493 Fraser Health
  • 78 Island Health
  • 194 Interior Health
  • 98 Northern Health

There are currently 7,242 people being monitored for COVID due to exposures, and 61,117 are considered recovered

The 21 deaths brings the provincial total to 1,210.

Dr. Henry said they are starting February with limited vaccine supply but hope to get increased supply as month goes on.

She expects additional Moderna vaccines later this week, and small amounts of Pfizer this week after none last week.

A total of 138,892 residents have been immunized with a single dose, and 4,491 with two doses.

Henry said there are 18 cases confirmed of COVID variants in B.C.: four of the South African and 14 of the United Kingdom variant, with case of the UK in Interior Health (a traveller who got it directly from the UK).
