Fortis Legacy Fund to be reviewed by Vernon council

A 13 million dollar gift given to the City of Vernon by Fortis BC a number of years ago doesn’t have any strings attached.

Questions about the fund came up during the city’s 2021 budget debate, in terms of what the money could be used for.

Despite not having any encumbrances on how the money is spent, council appears to want to stay with the intent of the ‘legacy’ part of the fund.

“I’m concerned about leaving something tangible for the community. I wouldn’t want to use the money to buy down the tax rate,” Coun. Brian Quiring said.

Coun. Kelly Fehr made a motion to seek public consultation on how the money might be spent.

“I don’t know why we would take up staff time, for something we should already know,” Coun. Kari Gares said. “The mindset of the council of the day might be different.”

“I think we need to have a special council meeting on goals for the legacy fund,” Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said.

That idea struck a cord with council and Fehr withdrew his motion, in favour of holding the special meeting.

A portion of funds were previously used to purchase a new fire truck.

Some of the ideas floated for the money include a new outdoor rink in Polson Park or another location, the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre and the Greater Vernon Active Living Centre.
