Money is tight for Vernon discretionary grants

UPDATE

Vernon council has endorsed the City of Vernon’s finance committee recommendations on discretionary grant applications.

There were 13 applications totalling $130,337 for available funds of $34,000. The committee recommended the expenditure of $33,980 of available funds, meaning several organizations will not receive funding.

The recommendations are as follows:

1. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Allan Brooks Nature Centre in the amount of $25,000 as the city has limited funds for disbursement.

2. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Archway Society for Domestic Peace in the amount of $3,000 as an application has already been submitted in 2020.

3. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Canadian Mental Health Association in the amount of $10,000 as the city has limited funds for disbursement.

4. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Community Recreation Initiative Society in the amount of $5,000 as an application has already been submitted in 2020.

5. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to the International Tree Project in the amount of $23,337 as the city has limited funds for disbursement.

6. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to Literacy Society of the North Okanagan in the amount of $3,000 to assist with a new youth tutoring service.

7. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association in the amount of $5,000 for ongoing programs.

8. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to Okanagan Screen Arts Society in the amount of $16,900 to assist with operational costs to the Vernon Towne Theatre.

9. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Schubert Centre Society in the amount of $10,000 as an application has already been submitted in 2020.

10. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to Vernon Community Radio Society in the amount of $2,500 to assist with operational costs.

11. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to Vernon Montessori Society in the amount of $3,580 to assist with the purchase of learning materials.

12. Council deny a Council Discretionary Grant to Vernon Paddling Society in the amount of $14,000 as the city has limited funds for disbursement.

13. Council approve, on a one-time basis, a Council Discretionary Grant to Vernon Senior Citizens Recreational Society in the amount of $3,000 to assist with signage and window/door wrap.
