Recreation services belt tightening due to COVID-19

City of Vernon recreation services is adjusting for the potential of 50 percent less revenue in 2021 and expenses remaining at current levels.
Manager of Recreation Services, Doug Ross, has presented city council with a report prior to this month’s budget debate detailing some of the measures that could be taken to deal with the major shortfall.
- Reducing major maintenance project budget by $500,000 .
- Defer transfer to vehicle and equipment reserve
- Eliminating arena event advertising .
- Cancelling an aquatic centre Wibit inflatable rental
- Eliminating furniture purchases .
- Increasing fees for programs and services by 5 per cent
- Reducing operating hours of the aquatic centre on weekends to 4:00 pm
- Reducing operating hours of the arenas to 9:00 pm .
- Closing the Priest Valley Arena from May to September
- Reducing staff training
- Defer purchase of a sport floor for Kal Tire North
- Defer hiring of a staff position
- Reduce aquatic centre advertising
- Defer transfer to lT Reserve Fund
“The proposal is reflective of operating in a COVID-19 pandemic environment,” Ross said. “lt must be emphasized that the 2021 budget projection is based on considered assumptions due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation.”
