BX-Swan Lake Fire Department cancels Halloween fireworks

Oct 22, 2020 | 2:32 PM

Lots of events have been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the BX/Swan Lake fire department isn’t going to let that dampen its community spirit.

Halloween is known for trick-or-treating, eating lots of candy, and if you live in the BX/Swan Lake area, it’s also known as the hugely popular community fireworks event hosted by the BX-Swan Lake Fire Rescue. The event attracts hundreds each year.

With restrictions on crowd sizes of 50 holding a large event wasn’t feasible this year.

“This is the first time in 38 years that we have had to cancel the Halloween Fireworks event,” Bill Wacey, chief of the BX-Swan Lake Fire Rescue said. “While we are saddened to have to cancel. The health and safety of the community is paramount and we look forward to future fireworks events.”

Throughout the year, the firefighters at BX-Swan Lake donate a portion of their paycheques to pay for the Halloween event. So, instead of holding the Halloween event, they are donating $2,500 to pay for a new picnic table and bench at the BX Community Park that sits directly behind the fire hall.
