More racist, sexist comments on political signs

Another Okanagan political candidate is reporting racist and sexist attacks on her election signs.

Amanda Poon, who is running for the Green Party in Kelowna-Mission, said some of her signs were tagged with inappropriate comments while others were completely destroyed.

Poon said she and the B.C. Green Party condemn the vandalism and bigotry in all its forms.

“While this is deeply unfortunate, it comes as no surprise,” Poon said. “As a Chinese-Canadian, I’ve faced similar attacks on my name, my gender, and my race all my life – starting in the playground and, now, following me into the political realm. But this is bigger than me. We’ve seen numerous attacks like this elsewhere in our community, across party lines.”

Vernon-Monashee NDP candidate Harwinder Sandhu’s signs were defaced with sexist slurs and swastikas last week.

“I was sick to my stomach when she [campaign manager] told me about the swastika and ‘C-word,’ but you know I had to get there to see and fix it because I still was hoping that it was not true. You live in a community, you hope that this behaviour doesn’t exist, but sadly it does,” Sandhu told NEWS 1130 in a story that has gone provincial.

Sandhu added while she is used to racism and has a thick skin, this latest act not only disturbed her, it also disturbed her kids.

“It affects your whole family,” said Sandhu who has ran for political office twice before for the NDP in provincial and federal elections.
