After close to three decades in the Vernon School District, Joe Rogers is ready to hand the administrative reins over to someone else.

The superintendent of District 22 has served notice he plans to retire on July 31, 2021, which will give the board of education time to find his successor.

“After 27 years with the Vernon School District, Superintendent Rogers has provided the board with sufficient lead time to recruit and hire a new superintendent who will lead the board in the next strategic plan shaping the future for the district,” a district news release said.

“It is with mixed feelings that I inform the public that Mr. Joe Rogers, Superintendent of Schools for School District #22 (Vernon), will retire at the end of this school year, said board chair Robert Lee. “It has been my personal pleasure, as it has been for all trustees and staff, to have worked along with Joe as the district progressed and improved. Joe’s leadership has focused on our students, schools and staff, making School District #22 a great place to learn.”

The district said Rogers is a valuable leader and his experience will be missed.

“During his 27 years with SD #22 he has been a vice principal, principal, director of instruction and is currently in his eighth year as superintendent. He has also been the director of the Thompson Okanagan Superintendents’ Association, a B.C. School Superintendents board member and served on the Provincial Learning Advisory Committee,” the release added.

Locally Rogers has been on the Boys and Girls Club Advisory Committee, has received the Rick Hansen Community Difference Maker Award, and is a Champion of the Child Award Recipient.
