Too many signs?

District to take closer look at crosswalk safety

Sep 21, 2020 | 5:43 AM

The District of Coldstream will investigate safety concerns about a new pedestrian crossing in the community.

A resident, Michael Waberski, made a recent presentation to council about the crossing by the new Red Gate parking lot on Kidston Road.

“[His] safety concern is with regards to signs obstructing the view of pedestrians crossing the road,” said Mayor Jim Garlick. “We have asked that staff check to make sure there are no problems. We have also asked the speed data be collected to determine the effectiveness of the raised crosswalk that was installed.”

The mayor says Mr. Waberski had a few other concerns about the parking lot project that was completed in August, providing more parking for that entrance to Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park.

“The larger issue for Mr. Waberski is that council did not support his request for 90 feet of concrete wall, as on College Way, as part of the project” Garlick told Vernon Matters. “Coldstream did support his requests for a gate on the parking lot and concrete barricades along the inside corner.”

In other news from Coldstream council, the company that runs the concession at Kal Beach has got another two year deal for the service.

Kal Lake Food Services pays the District $4,000 a year for the 5-month contract.

District staff say the extension will allow the operator additional time to recover from disruptions this year due to the Covid pandemic.
