New funding, more access

Okanagan Lake access gets additional funds

One of the dozens of Okanagan Lake access points identified in the City of Vernon 2015 master park plan is receiving additional funding.

The property located at 8130 Tronson Road was identified as a high priority location by city planning staff, during a review of a 2005 lake access study, that was reconfirmed in 2015.

At the time the city undertook numerous public participation (P2) initiatives, and consistently heard that the public would like to see more access to the lake, but did not feel that there are enough places to do so.

During the consultation for the Parks Master Plan for example, residents identified lakes and beach areas as one of their top priorities for improvements. Given that much of Vernon’s lakeshore property is privately owned, Vernon’s lake accesses — public road rights of way (ROW) that provide access to water bodies — play an important role in connecting residents to Okanagan Lake.

These lake accesses are distinct from parks in that their purpose is to provide enhanced public access to the lake, while other amenities, such as benches or picnic tables, for example, are ancillary to these accesses.

Council has approved taking $100,000 from the annual storm maintenance budget carry over reserve, and $75,000 from the 32nd Avenue restoration project. The funds will be used to make further improvements to the Tronson Road property.
