Action required at Paddlewheel Park

Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming has put city staff members on notice to come up with solutions regarding overflow parking at Paddlewheel Park before next summer.

Paddlewheel is the busiest boat launch on the Vernon arm of the lake, and the park is also highly utilized with a hall, museum, beach, playground, basketball and tennis courts.

“Every weekend from June through Labour Day there are issues there,” Cumming said.

Trucks with trailers historically had parked along Okanagan Landing road, but that has been posted as no parking as it obstructs the bike lane and creates a traffic hazard with vehicles and trailers extending into the roadway. Bylaw enforcement issues dozens of tickets on busy weekends.

Staff members have also been instructed to gather information from other municipalities on the type of buoys used to mark swimming areas that don’t obstruct milfoil removal equipment.

Milfoil clogged beach areas are a determent to tourism, the city said.
