Injured driver gets help, then immediate roadside prohibition

A Sorrento man was given an immediate roadside prohibition last week after an RCMP officer found him lying injured in the middle of Highway 1.

On Aug. 20, at 11:15 a.m., a Salmon Arm officer was patrolling the Trans Canada Highway near Third Nations Road when he spotted a vehicle that went off the road and then veered back onto the highway before coming to a stop.

“The driver and sole occupant of the smashed vehicle was located injured and stunned by the crash, laying in the travel portion of the Trans Canada Highway,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West, Salmon Arm detachment commander. “The officer was able to get traffic stopped with his emergency equipment before anyone ran over the driver or was involved in a secondary collision with the disabled vehicle.”

Scott said the driver suffered a broken leg and was lying in a dangerous position on the road unable to get out of the travel lanes.

The officer got medical attention for the injured male and then investigated the victim for impaired driving.

“As a result of that investigation the man, a 21-year-old from Sorrento, was served an immediate roadside driving prohibition and was transported to hospital where his leg was treated and he will recover from his injuries,” West said.
