Former traditon could be revived

Grad students could get to paint names on Suicide Hill

A former tradition for graduating Vernon students may be making a return.

Grads used to spray paint their names, and other phases, on Suicide Hill on 30th Avenue in Lower East Hill, so named for its steep grade.

Coun. Brian Quiring has asked city staff, at the request of someone else, if it’s possible for this year’s grads to do that in light of all their grad events that have been cancelled due to Covid-19.

“This year they can’t take a photo on the steps of courthouse (another tradition), they can’t have graduation, really, so I had a request if the city would allow students to spray paint their names on Suicide Hill,” Quiring said at council’s meeting Monday. “We would have to block off the street for the day. I think it would be fun and it’s a nice gesture for these people gathering.”

Council will get a report on the issue at its next meeting June 8.

Coun. Akbal Mund reminded staff to make sure they get input from the residents in that area.

“Can we make sure we engage the neighbours who are going to be affected by this?” asked Mund. “Empty spray cans; maybe the grass gets painted, you never know, right?”
