The opening date for the newest grocery store in Vernon has still not been confirmed.

The former Safeway on 30th Avenue has been converted into the discount brand FreshCo by parent company Sobeys.

A spokesperson for Sobeys said they are on target for opening this summer, with nothing more specific than that at this point.

“There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our teammates and our customers. We are working closely with Public Health and have implemented a number of safety and physical distancing measures to protect our employees, customers, and communities,” Samantha Detwiler from Sobeys said in an email to Vernon Matters.

Detwiler says a temporary pharmacy continues to operate on the south side of the lot.

“During this critical time, we are focused on providing an essential service to ensure the community has access to the food and pharmacy necessities they require for their families. Our new FreshCo will also help meet an immediate community need for more shopping options, lightening the burden on other grocery locations in the area.”

The Safeway closed last November after 54 years in operation.
