Police converge on rural area after reports of gunfire

Police had their guns drawn as they investigated reports of gunfire in Vernon’s BX area Monday morning.

“On September 23, just before 11 a.m., the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received more than one report of a disturbance in the area of the 6000 block of Rimer Road. Police responded to the area with a number of resources after learning that a male suspect had produced an alleged firearm and the sounds of gunfire could be heard,” Const. Kelly Brett said.

As officers tried to determine who was involved and if there was a gun, the area was locked down and potential suspects were taken into custody.

Officers later confirmed it was family dispute involving two males and a female where an imitation firearm was allegedly produced and fired.

From the residence, officers seized numerous imitation firearms and 9 mm magazines with ammunition.

A 24-year-old Vernon man has a court date in November for possible charges of possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The other male and female were released with no charges.

“Calls of this nature will generate a large police presence and we recognize that can be alarming for the neighbourhood to see,” Brett said. “We would like to thank the residents in the area at the time for your patience and cooperation as officers worked to ensure your safety.”

“The mishandling of imitation firearms can lead to serious Criminal Code offences and will result in a considerable police response,” RCMP Superintendent Shawna Baher said. “Our police officers will treat every firearm as real until they can prove they are not.”

The police resources used included a helicopter which was seen hovering around the area, prompting calls from residents to Vernon Matters wondering what was going on.
