Marianne & Leonard, September 30th
Okanagan Screen Arts Society is showing Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love at the Vernon Towne Cinema on September 30th.
This is an enlightening documentary by British filmmaker, Nick Broomfield who follows the life of Leonard Cohen, a Jewish Canadian pop singer who made such ’60s pop classics as “Suzanne,” “Marianne,” and the biggest-selling of all – “Hallelujah”.
The story begins on the Greek island of Hydra before Cohen had become famous. It gives us a vivid snapshot of the early 1960s and a complicated, mysterious love story between Marianne Ihlen, a beautiful Norweigan single mother, and the then struggling novelist, Leonard Cohen, in a period of time when Cohen was transitioning into a world-class songwriter.
The creative process and nature of the artistic spirit is explored in Broomfield’s riveting documentary as he examines this fascinating relationship during a time when Cohen was known to be going through women, money, alcohol and drugs, calling the women his muses. .
