Provides a visible presence

Constables on patrol in downtown

Amid growing concerns about safety in downtown Vernon, the RCMP is letting the public know about their Downtown Enforcement Unit.

The unit is composed of two constables whose primary function is to provide enhanced police service in the downtown core and other vulnerable crime areas.

“The unit provides a visible presence through proactive enforcement and targeted patrols. The officers can often be seen throughout the downtown area on foot, bike or in a fully marked police vehicle,” said Const. Kelly Brett.

The officers, Const. Mark MacAulay and Const. Ryan Carey, are also responsible for establishing working relationships with partner agencies who routinely deal with street-entrenched clients or other issues in the downtown.

Those agencies include City of Vernon By-law Enforcement, the Upper Room Mission, Interior Health and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

“At the heart of the Downtown Enforcement Unit, are two constables who you may have seen passing by your store fronts or your homes as they patrol,” said Brett.

MacAulay is originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and has 16 years of policing experience, with four of those years in Vernon.

Carey is from a small town just outside of London, Ontario and has three-and-a-half years of policing experience in Vernon.
