Unknown future for Xerendipity Garden

Sep 23, 2019 | 3:16 PM

The Xerendipity Garden in Polson Park will be closing its doors.

The Regional District of North Okanagan will not be renewing the lease for the space, and control and maintenance will revert to the City of Vernon.

“The Xerendipity Garden has been demonstrating environmentally sustainable gardening practices in its small nook between the Okanagan Science Centre and the Arts Centre in Polson Park since 2006. This space has showcased drought-tolerant landscaping, organic gardening, composting principles, and water conservation and provided a venue for enhanced education, demonstrations, celebrations, arts and culture,” Ashley Gregerson, a Communications Officer for RDNO said.

Structures such as fencing, composters, signs and storage units will be removed, leaving a number of trees, plants and paths in the city’s control.

“It is unknown at this time what the City of Vernon plans long-term for the space, but the transition from a specific garden to incorporation into Polson Park will begin early in October,” Gregerson added.

The site got its name for its ever-changing and growing array of plants.

“Many school classes, arts and science students, and the general public have enjoyed the space for its teaching and learning opportunities through formal workshops, beautifully crafted signage, and independent wanderings,” Gregerson said.

The RDNO is planning on constructing a waste reduction education centre at the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility.
